Colony Real Estate
Malibu Colony is a gated community that lies on an immaculate coastline and has the ultimate privacy for high-profile homeowners. Up the coast from Malibu Lagoon and the Adamson House, Malibu Colony is the authentic and original Malibu, although its unique character is highly guarded by the guarded gate entrances. Historically glamorous, the Colony has been home to famous members of the silver screen since the early days of motion pictures. North of Carbon Beach and Malibu Creek, the legendary “Queen of Malibu,” May Rindge developed the Malibu Beach Motion Picture Colony in 1926. When world famous film star Anna Q. built a beach cottage on Malibu Colony, it was the first time a piece of the privately held Rancho Malibu holding was sold outside the family. From then on 30 ft wide beach lots were leased for 10 year periods at 1 dollar per square foot per month, but the escalating popularity of the celebrity enclave had the Rindge’s rethinking their strategy. Eventually the prospect of selling off land became an impossible temptation to avoid and the breaking-up of Frederick Rindge’s beloved Rancho Malibu kingdom began.
One journalist of the time described the Malibu Colony thusly, “A half-mile stretch of delirium tremens architecture along an astounding Pacific Ocean. A place where the stars go, ‘to get away from it all,’ but build their houses with a tiny three feet between. Every house screaming out the personality of the owner, a dead giveaway. Even the fish can’t get over it, while the seagulls fly dizzily around, squawking for help and a bit more caviar.” Amongst this elite, popular and worldly crowd were Bing Crosby, John Gilbert, Marie Dressler, Warner Baxter, Constance Bennett and other legends of early cinema. This shared devotion to the isolated stretch of sand twenty miles from Hollywood, epitomized by the Malibu Colony, is a tradition that continues amongst the movers and shakers of entertainment to this day.
After World War II a new cast of legends took up residence at the Malibu Colony, and enjoyed socializing over tennis, at the Malibu Inn (which has been relocated to its home across from the Malibu Pier) and the Malibu Colony Little Theatre where famous residents would stage their own theatrical performances during the final weeks of summer. The colony has long been home to the stars, and the culture which began as an enclave at Malibu Colony has stretched across Malibu real estate up and down the coast. The rich and famous cherish Malibu for their ability to ‘get away from it all’ and to be treated as any other normal person in this town that is as laid back about celebrity as it is about it’s gorgeous vistas and ocean views.
